Trey Anastasio speaks about how drug court changed his life, and how he now lives a life of service.

He’s been serving it up all summer long I must say!

So, we’re a little late to post this business — and those in the know already know, you know — but there’s a guitarist we all like going out on tour with his band in October and November. That guy. Up there. Not Bobblehead Trey, silly, but the real deal Big Red. Huzzah!
Guiseppe will play seven shows — five regular and two festivals — with the septet: Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass), Ray Paczkowski (keyboards), Russell Remington (tenor saxophone and flute), Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet and vocals) and Natalie Cressman (trombone and vocals). There’s one show for every band member, though I’m pretty sure they’re all gonna play at each show. Probably together even.
So, if you’re interested in seeing Trey play in small places (and large places), head on over to Trey.com and get you some tickets, son. Advance sales close at 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday. Chop, chop.

Following up on our earlier post about Trey’s interview with The Believer — and, seriously, if you haven’t read it yet, all we can do is link to it again and again and again — my favorite part is easily when he quotes this entire Family Guy segment. Pure genius.

The Believer - Interview With Trey Anastasio

I’ve read some great interviews from Trey, but this one really seals the deal for me: he’s a genius. He knows more about music from any era than the most hardcore Phish fans will even know about his own. Music history, composition, improvisation, who he is, what drives him, what makes him a mad scientist… he gets very personal about how even still he struggles with the thin line between music/reality/life/losing control.

Sometimes I think his intelligence and vast understanding of music is lost on many fans with his dorkiness and rambling narratives, cornball humor, his struggles with sobriety, and his battles with the guitar. But deep down, Trey Anastasio’s insight into music, his appreciation for its history, and understanding of how it can bring us all together is what has opened my heart more and more over the years, not just to the Phish experience but to the greater magic of sharing music with others.

Please, read this.

Notable bits from the interview:
1. Phish plans to enter the studio this winter to “see where it goes.”
2. Trey has been toying with the idea of covering Metallica’s Master of Puppets album and has been listening to records by Beach House and the Grates.
3. Expect 2012 to see the band playing fewer shows than 2011, due to family obligations (which I take to mean the arrival of “Question Mark” McConnell, first mentioned at Portsmouth).
4. Trey likes you and misses you and is happy to see you at shows.*
*May not be true. I may be extrapolating.

Everything seems to be dialed in right now… The band seems loose in all the right ways.

Strap in, it’s gonna be one helluva ride out at the track next weekend.
