Phish - “AC/DC Bag -> Slave to the Traffic Light”
11.21.97 - Hampton Coliseum - Hampton VA
Thanks to the good folks at Phish, this show and the next two will be released in a couple weeks. This was my first show at the Mothership, one that I had been eagerly awaiting, given the venue’s history. Thanksgiving break at Virginia Tech had just begun. I was in my third semester of business school and taking my girlfriend (who I married) to meet my parents for the first time. However, Lisa’s break at Shenandoah didn’t begin for a couple days. Lucky for me, three Phish shows were within a few hours of driving during that time.
I recall leaving in a driving rainstorm. I was a passenger the entire trip and the initial stretch from Blacksburg to Roanoke on I-81 was the roughest. My buddy’s car only had one working windshield wiper - on the passenger’s side.
We made it safely to Hampton and the rain subsided. Our crew was a hodgepodge of friends from Tech - many that I had never seen a show with. We did park in the lot and I recall pre-gaming with the Hokies on the radio. I believe they were beat rather soundly by Pittsburgh that day. It didn’t matter though. We were at Phish, in Hampton. Typical for our crew, we rolled in late, during the end of the “Emotional Rescue” opener. While that’s always been a regret, I can’t complain. I think there was enough incredible music from this show to be thankful for.
